North Paws

Live-action workplace comedy

A veterinary team handles animals, emergencies, and the people who turn a clinic into a family.

Created by Amy MatthewTwo seasons · 20 episodes developed

The concept

At a suburban animal hospital, junior veterinary technician Ethan arrives eager to help and immediately discovers that technical training has not prepared him for this particular team. The waiting room, treatment area and front desk each generate a different kind of chaos; the break room is where the people holding everything together finally admit how hard the day has been.

The comedy comes from the distance between what clients expect, what animals do and what the staff can realistically manage. Beneath the sarcasm is a workplace family built through exhausting shifts, small rescues and the relief of finding someone who understands why the work matters.

People & relationships

Characters with something at stake.

Dr. Marcus Chen · 42 · Head veterinarian

Composure is his defining skill. With a dry sense of humor and years of experience, he steadies the team when everyone else spirals. His authority rests on genuine care, even when his advice gets lost in the noise.

Dr. Sarah Williams · 35 · Emergency veterinarian

Running on too little sleep and too much coffee, Sarah brings emotional openness to a job that demands stamina. She can laugh at a ridiculous case and be deeply affected by the next animal through the door.

Marcus · 28 · Office manager / receptionist

A different Marcus from Dr. Chen: he is the human buffer between the waiting room and the clinical team. His extraordinary customer-service composure makes the front desk a second stage for the comedy.

Jenny · 26 · Veterinary technician

The practical backbone of the hospital knows its files, equipment and personalities. Her sarcasm helps Ethan survive the learning curve, while her own vulnerability emerges when the team starts meddling in her personal life.

Ethan · 24 · Junior veterinary technician

The audience enters with a newcomer who is enthusiastic, frightened and constantly learning. Across his first year, uncertainty gives way to belonging; his growing confidence with small animals gives that development a concrete shape.

Patricia · 58 · Office administrator

Institutional memory, homemade food and quiet authority make Patricia indispensable. Her possible retirement forces everyone to recognize the invisible work that makes the hospital function.

Story journey

World & visual storytelling

Exam rooms and the reception desk create fast, overlapping public comedy. The break room offers a quieter counterpoint: shared food, exhausted honesty and a place where the team can stop performing competence for a moment.

INT. NORTH PAWS ANIMAL HOSPITAL - 8:00 AM

ETHAN (24, junior vet tech, fresh out of school) walks in on his first day.

He's nervous. He's excited. He's completely unprepared for what's about to happen.

JENNY (26, vet tech, looks at him like he's a puppy)

(with dead eyes)

You know CPR?

ETHAN

(nervous)

For... people?

JENNY

(turning back to her work)
We'll find out.
Episode 1 · “First Day” · End-of-shift exchange

North Paws · Written by Amy Matthew · Selected excerpt

ETHAN

(to the group)

Does this get easier?

They all look at him.

All of them: No.

JENNY

But you get better at pretending it doesn't break you.

ETHAN

That's not comforting.

PATRICIA

(handing him a cookie)

These are. Eat.
