The Belles

Southern drama

Four best friends enter pageant season as loyalty, bias, and perfection threaten to make the crown cost everything.

Created by Amy MatthewTwo seasons · 20 episodes developed

Public treatment

Four best friends enter pageant season. Only one can wear the crown.

Four Southern best friends enter the same pageant season believing their bond is stronger than competition. Preparation turns private insecurity into public performance while judges, families, and tradition define a narrow version of perfection.

As the crown moves closer, bias and ambition test what the women promised one another. The emotional question is not simply who wins, but which friendships can survive being measured against one another.

Format: One-hour Southern ensemble drama

Tone: Beautiful but brutal, glamorous but honest, funny when it needs to be and devastating when it has to be.

The world: Belle County, Tennessee: historic homes, country clubs, pageant rehearsals, salons, diners, and a community where a crown functions as social currency.

Pilot story

The opening hour.

Reigning queen Ashley welcomes her three best friends as competitors. Jennifer arrives ready for war, Lauren treats the event as an audition, and Katie immediately meets coded assumptions about belonging. They toast to friendship while privately measuring one another as threats.

First-season treatment

The complete public season arc.

Preparation exposes jealousy, Ashley’s dangerous diet-pill use, Lauren’s acting opportunity, Katie’s confrontation with racial bias, and Jennifer’s calculated campaign. Ashley withdraws to save herself. Jennifer wins, but victory feels like loss. The second season turns the crown into a cage and ends with the friends choosing advocacy and authenticity over the pageant hierarchy.

Series runway: The two-season core story is complete; future chapters can introduce contestants mentored by the original four and test whether the system can change from within.
